I Designed the Self Watering Spike Out of Pure Necessity

I’ve always loved having indoor plants — there’s something calming about bringing a bit of nature inside. They clean the air, brighten a room, and make any space feel more alive. But as a single dad running two businesses and raising my daughter, my plants often ended up neglected.

I’d forget to water them for a few days, then overcompensate and drown them the next. The result? Droopy leaves, patchy soil, and way too many “plant funerals.”

I tried every self-watering product I could find online, but none of them fit what I needed. Most either released water too quickly or looked cheap and out of place — which, admittedly, they were.

Other products often look cheap or break easily. Vessela’s Self Water Spike (right) combines form and function — a design you’ll actually want on display.

So I decided to put my design and problem-solving skills to work and create my own version — something that actually worked, looked beautiful, and complemented my home. That’s how the Self Water Spike was born.

💧 How It Works — Simple Science, Smarter Watering

I wanted something that would water my plants the way nature does — slowly, deeply, and from the roots up. After weeks of testing, I found the answer was simple: capillary action.

The Self Water Spike uses a natural cotton wick to draw water from the 600 mL glass reservoir directly into the soil — just like roots naturally absorb moisture. The wick only releases water when the soil begins to dry, keeping your plants perfectly hydrated without overwatering.

Each spike holds enough for 1.5–2 weeks of hands-free watering depending on your plant and conditions. Simply fill it, place it near the base of your plant, and let it do the rest — no electronics, no pumps, no fuss.

🌱 Why I Made It Different

The problem with most self-watering devices is they’re made as cheap as possible. They work for a few days, then clog, flood your pot, or look completely out of place.

I wanted something that was as aesthetic as it was functional — something that could sit proudly next to my pots instead of hiding behind them.

So I made mine using a clear glass reservoir, plant-based PLA top and bottom, and a hand-assembled cotton wick. Each one is made by me in Kembla Grange, NSW, and comes in 27 colours to suit any décor style.

This design doesn’t just look better — it also promotes deep-root growth and a healthier watering cycle. Instead of surface watering (which encourages shallow roots), the Self Water Spike keeps moisture down where roots actually thrive.

🌿 From My Home to Yours

Since using these around my home, I haven’t lost a single plant. The moment the glass runs low, it’s an easy visual cue to top it up — no guessing, no dry surprises.

The clear glass reservoir makes it simple to see when your plant needs a refill, and even my daughter has gotten into the habit of helping out. She’ll walk by and say, “Dad, that one’s getting low,” and top it up for me.

That’s when I realised I wasn’t the only one who needed something like this — something reliable, stylish, and effortless. So I decided to share it. I refined the design, tested a few prototypes, and launched it online so others could finally enjoy thriving plants without the constant worry.
